How does Netflix know when you try to take a screenshot? Turns out it doesn't. Rather than a simple piece of software recognizing a screenshot attempt and blacking out the screen, what's going on is actually happening at the hardware level. There are two layers to how content is displayed on your phone. A surface Ul layer and a protected content layer. Netflix only displays content on layer 2, and your phone only captures layer 1, making it impossible to screenshot.
